At the time of the album's release, the generally laudatory reviews spoke of total blossoming, embodying the relentless pursuit of exploration by one of the leading jazz rock formations of the 70s. It was even referred to as a "promised land," a perfection that was rightly said to extend what had been hinted at in the exceptional Mysterious Traveller and Tale Spinnin'. Here, everything is conducive to the emergence of powerful nostalgic images, from the musical evocation of the Strait of Gibraltar (you can even hear the foghorn of a cargo ship that adds to the melancholic atmosphere) to the exotic flavors reminiscent of the Caribbean. The electronics of the synthetic keyboards of the time have rarely had such a human character as on this record, punctuated, quite literally, by an incredible fireworks display! On drums, Chester Thompson (from Frank Zappa's band) performs feats, while Jaco Pastorius, freshly recruited just two weeks prior, holds down the bass. His roundness, the new and singing sound he shapes, promises great things. Later, on Heavy Weather, "Birdland" will be HIS piece, the one that will reveal the full uniqueness of the inflections he is capable of.
