After many years of research and musical maturation, Alpha presents: Combattimenti! Vincent Dumestre here offers us his interpretation of La Fiera di Farfa, a work entirely new to disc, accompanied by jewels of secular vocal music written by Monteverdi. Marazzoli’s La Fiera contains the parody of the famous Combatimento di Tancredi e Clorinda (composed one year earlier), which justifies its presence on this album. We have therefore chosen to include the two works, accompanied by a program supplement that echoes La Fiera (we will mention, among others, the trio of fishermen, whose writing recalls Monteverdi’s famous Lamento della Ninfa; or the no less famous Hor ch’el ciel, an emblematic figure of the early Baroque that would strongly influence future musical writing). Composed by Marco Marazzoli in 1639, La Fiera di Farfa is an operatic interlude, pure theater set to music, like those found in Italian fairground theaters in the 17th century. This work was so well known that it was notably staged by Bernini, and revived throughout the 18th century, and still discussed during the 19th century. Vincent Dumestre invites us here to discover and rediscover masterpieces of Italian Baroque. After the success of the tour, here is the album, at last!
