In 1670, Molière and Lully presented Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme, a lavish Comédie-Ballet performed by Molière's Troupe, with musicians conducted by Lully, ballets by Pierre Beauchamp, sets by Carlo Vigarani, and Turkish costumes by the Chevalier d'Arvieux, before the King. The work is inspired by Ambassador Soliman Musta Aga-Feraga, whom Louis XIV had made wait for long weeks before receiving him, causing his discontent that made the King smile and mocked the courtiers, with all of Paris laughing at the exotic customs of the envoys from the Grand Turk. The idea came to Molière for a plot based on false Turks, to ridicule a Bourgeois aspiring to nobility: a masterpiece was born, featuring the dazzling Turkish Ceremony, and concluding with a sumptuous Ballet of Nations.
