L'Egisto

Description

In Venice in 1643, Cavalli's new opera creates a sensation among the audience at the Teatro San Cassiano: L'Egisto, named after the main character of the work, an Arcadian shepherd who is led to believe he has lost his beloved by an ambiguous inscription. This is followed by misunderstandings and spectacular pieces, a scene of madness, and a descent into the Underworld for one who believes he is Orpheus in search of Eurydice… The sumptuousness of the music, where the feelings of a love quartet are masterfully depicted, gives Vincent Dumestre and his cast the opportunity for vibrant colors, which virtuously paint this first great labyrinth of Baroque emotions.
