"New World Artifacts" is the first album by the French band Unschooling, based in Rouen, following several EPs. Released on October 6 via Bad Vibrations, it is a collection of around thirty minutes of lo-fi post-punk, enhanced with melodies and subtle pop structures, with chaotic no-wave dissonance. As they write themselves, "New World Artifacts is an ode to the unexpected, a tribute to the many art rock bands that are always where you least expect them." Already considered one of the most exciting bands in the new school of post-punk revivalists, they have spent the last two years playing to enthusiastic crowds and at festivals across the continent (including several in France). The quintet Unschooling, as indicated on the album cover, is made up of Vincent Fevrier (vocals/guitar), Damien Tebbal (bass), Paul Morvant (guitar), Marc Lebreuilly (guitar/synth) and Thomas Fromager (drums). The musicianship is complex and meticulous, hardened by the time they have spent together playing on the road. For 'New World Artifacts', other musicians were brought in to expand the sound in a new way, notably saxophonists Levi Gillis (The Dip, Beat Connection) and Emeline Morisset (Les Agamemnonz), as well as Kyleen King (Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks, My Morning Jacket) on strings.
