"Lady and Gentlemen, Merrill is performing." This is how Merrill Garbus, the mastermind behind Tune-Yards, opens the borders of her new country with the track My Country. A colorful and mixed country oddly named Whokill. In 2009, with Bird-Brains, Merrill surprised everyone with her stunning and quirky freak folk. While the tracks were unfortunately poorly served by a somewhat lo-fi production, Whokill gains in scope thanks to a cleaner sound and a more sovereign maturity. The madness is still present and will satisfy all ears eager for adventurous sounds. A true mirror of Merrill Garbus's eccentricity, the compositions easily shift from tribal and eruptive rhythms (My Country, Doorstep) to a makeshift folk ballad (Powa, Wooly Wolly Gong), while also taking uncontrollable detours like Gangsta or the African influences of Bizness. Both more polished in production and bolder in writing, Whokill allows Tune-Yards to successfully navigate the "difficult" second album milestone while enabling Tune-Yards to become, in a way, the champion of intelligent musical diversity.
