What an enormous room is not just the title of Torres' new album, it's an incantation, a phrase that Mackenzie Scott has had in her mind for several years, just like some of the songs found here. Mackenzie's undeniable guitar talent is still the driving force behind her songs, but in "Collect," it is pushed through a polyphonic octave generator, creating a sexy and extraterrestrial sound, a provocative statement of intent. The album was recorded with her friend Sarah Jaffe, a Texas singer-songwriter who has collaborated with Eminem and producer Symbolyc One. Jaffe provides the rhythm section for What an enormous room by playing bass and drums. The album contains the ironic art rock of Laurie Anderson, the rage of Nirvana, and the swag of ABBA. Rather than fearing the unknown space she occupies, Mackenzie Scott has chosen to fill it with as much of herself as possible, an artist who does not want to be stifled.
