After exploring funk, house, and psychedelic pop on his previous albums, Chaz Bear, aka Toro Y Moi, approached Outer Peace in 2019 with the desire to compose more direct and spontaneous tracks. Written between Oakland and Portland, the album favors tighter formats where hip-hop, contemporary R&B, electro, and indie pop intersect without ever settling into a single genre. Collaborations with Wet, Abra, and Instupendo are integrated into a clean production, built around drum machines, synthesizers, and particularly prominent bass lines.
