With "Seeing", Tord Gustavsen embarks on a new chapter in the vast and complex cycle of his trio recordings, which began in 2003 with "Changing Places" – an album now considered a classic.
This new album, composed of short, compact songs with highly concentrated forms, “reflects my personal evolution,” says the Norwegian pianist: “The older I get, the more I feel I’m moving towards the essential, both intimately and artistically.” Through five original pieces, two Johann Sebastian Bach cantatas, a traditional Norwegian hymn, and the 19th-century English hymn "Nearer My God, to Thee", Tord Gustavsen, accompanied by his usual partners Jarle Vespestad on drums and Steinar Raknes on double bass, intimately explores the unique blend of jazz, blues, gospel, Scandinavian folk, and church music that has defined his originality for over twenty years. Because he “cherishes melody above all else,” as Tord reaffirms, the group, both extraordinarily cohesive and restrained, patiently develops its music to reach peaks of sensitivity.
