Compared to the bright, acidic brass of the ubiquitous trumpet, the cornet's darker, rounder sound is, for him, the ideal means of expression. He is at the forefront of a group of brass players dedicated to exploring the incredible sonic potential of the cornet—an instrument often heard in early jazz bands but much less frequently today. The list of great contemporary cornetists is short—Tobias, Kirk Knuffke, Ron Miles… and not many others. In 2019, in his debut album WHERE THE SPIRITS EAT, with his passionate and mature voice, he presented all facets of the instrument's musicality. This work continues on his new album SILVER NEEDLE. Wiklund prefers to work acoustically, and this has become a somewhat dogmatic approach for the quartet. "We didn't use any amplification or headphones while recording this album. We were very close to each other in the studio and maintained a volume level that allowed everyone to hear what the others were playing," explains the bandleader. "It takes a lot of dedication and willingness to elevate collective intelligence, to play together. It's about opening your heart, your ears, and your musicality... to create a unity, greater than the individual."
