In 1973, The Who had begun recording their album 'Quadrophenia', the rock opera about mod culture. The "Quadrophenia" tour began in Stoke on Trent in October 1973, the same month the record was released. Their American tour began on November 20 at the Cow Palace; a legendary show during which Keith Moon passed out, prompting Pete Townshend to ask the audience: "Can anyone play the drums? I mean someone good". The show ended with audience member Scott Halpin behind Moon's kit. The penultimate Who concert in the United States on their 1973 tour took place at the Spectrum in Philadelphia on December 4. Playing a stunning concert that for many fans was the best show of the tour, The Who delivered an extraordinary set, surrounded by classics, but with a dynamic selection of 'Quadrophenia' numbers in its midst.
