Throughout their legendary ten-year existence, Shadow Ring has been an enigmatic force in the international underground music scene. Before disbanding in 2002, this chaotic rock group, formed in the southeast of England by Graham Lambkin and Darren Harris, left behind a series of eight albums and a handful of 45s. Blank Forms Editions is leading a retrospective of the band, including reissues over several years, an upcoming CD box set, and a book. Recorded during the summer of 1994, their second album Put the Music In Its Coffin is a darker affair than the first, City Lights. For this album, the duo turned to the Philadelphia label Siltbreeze, whose eclectic catalog of raucous rock and noise connected disparate underground scenes from the Midwest of America to the English Midlands and beyond. The makeshift percussion and adolescent candor of the album recall the verve of City Lights, while the piercing strings and distorted vocals give it a miasmic atmosphere reminiscent of the uncompromising and otherworldly experimentation of Hold Onto I.D. (1996) and Lighthouse (1997), making this album one of Shadow Ring's most distilled musical statements.
