The Rapture was formed in the spring of 1998 by Vito Roccoforte and Luke Jenner. Drawn to visionary bands like PIL, Television, and Chrome, they quickly built a reputation across the country among connoisseurs for their energetic and often chaotic live shows. Jenner, a true force of nature, jumped everywhere, while the rhythm section unleashed their characteristic "sonic deathfuck" groove. Two records were recorded that fall: an eight-track LP released on the cult San Diego art punk label Gravity Records, and a single on Gold Standard Laboratories, Sonny Kaye's label. After these two releases, the band took their off-kilter philosophy on the road, touring with Sunny Day Real Estate, Gogogo Airheart, and Nuzzle. In May 1999, the band settled in New York. Matt Safer, freshly arrived from Washington D.C., took over on bass. With a stronger lineup than ever, the band began exploring dance and pop music, adding Chic, The Byrds, The Happy Mondays, and Timbaland to their previous influences. On the subsequent EP, Out Of the Races and Onto the Tracks (2001), The Rapture perfectly mastered their iconoclastic style of fiery rock, drawing as much from dance music as from post-punk.
