La Grande Evasion

The multi-instrumentalist and producer from Hamburg, The Offline continues to build his cinematic universe with hip-hop and library music influences on his second album, "La grande évasion". The album reflects an escape into the unknown, rooted in memory, photography, place, and inner journey. It traces a voyage that draws on freedom and the search for identity—a journey that The Offline describes as "one of the oldest and most powerful motifs in human storytelling, found in myths, literature, cinema, and music." The first single, "Boulevard National", brings the musical narrative back to the streets of Marseille, the city to which The Offline's 2024 EP "Les Cigales" paid homage. Inspired by the textures of Anatolian psyche and West Coast surf, the track embodies the pulse of a city vibrant with multiculturalism, contrasts, and character. Continuing on, "Nikonos V" references a love for analog photography, which gave birth to "The Offline", both as an idea and a musical project. Light and rhythmic, with a warmth reminiscent of Khruangbin, Tommy Guerrero... the track takes its name from the film camera that accompanies him on his coastal explorations. Things take a stranger and more surreal turn on "Le trip", a dizzying journey punctuated by breakbeats, with a fiery saxophone improvisation from his regular collaborator Kimo Eiserbeck. Between boom-bap, vintage Japanese jazz-funk, and BADBADNOTGOOD, the track imagines a psychedelic detour through sound.
