On March 1, 2020, John Darnielle, Peter Hughes, Matt Douglas, and Jon Wurster, aka The Mountain Goats, headed to the legendary Sam Phillips Recording Studio in Memphis, Tennessee. Darnielle, armed with new songs, reconnected with producer Matt Ross-Spang, who had worked on *In League with Dragons* the previous year as a recording engineer. In the same studio where The Cramps recorded their debut album in 1980, The Mountain Goats spent a week capturing the magic of a band now at the peak of its powers, thanks to "magic microphones" salvaged from the country TV channel The Nashville Network. The result is *Getting Into Knives*. The album features Charles Hodges (who played on many Al Green records) on the Hammond B-3 organ and Chris Boerner (Hiss Golden Messenger) on guitar. On "The Last Place I Saw Alive," Darnielle details the pain of knowing you'll never see a loved one again, with even potential hope sabotaged. Elsewhere, "Wolf Count" elicits sympathy for a hunted wolf, despite the wolf's dreams of a good bloodbath. Written years before social distancing became a constant topic of conversation, "Tidal Wave" insists that not all waves are tidal waves. Albums like *Getting Into Knives* lead you through a doorway in the middle of a vast sea. With songs like these, you can find yourself plunged into ink-black depths or reaching for a cleansing breath of fresh air. Songs that illuminate despite the inevitability of loss.
