The band had released music every year from 1991 to 1998, but between the release of the New Asian Cinema EP that year and The Coroner's Gambit, the year 1999 passed without any official Mountain Goats album being released. The extra time spent on The Coroner's Gambit paid off: it is a breakthrough for John Darnielle as a songwriter.
