The songs on "Detached Engagement" are our most personal and emotionally revealing pieces to date. Recorded during a period of emotional turmoil, where we lost loved ones and uncertainty seemed the only constant, our studio became a refuge, a peaceful haven where we could focus our energies on a creative act of understanding and hope. We reconfigured our subversive pop to suit our current situation: distortion was toned down, ambiguity veiled by soundtracks was replaced by sharper clarity. Each song was stripped down to its essential elements, revealing a new complexity in our songwriting and arrangements. Our attachment to the power of pop has not diminished; we still believe it is a subversive means of communicating ideas beyond conventional messages of love and other frivolities. It still has the power to bring people together around a common vision of what things could be. We are happy to present these ten missives of post-industrial romance, existential melancholy, new beginnings, songs that float in the twilight of 80s synth-pop, 90s trip-hop, and electro. Not so heavy, this track is for slow dancers and close dancers. The Mistys are a pop band. The Mistys love drum machines, off-kilter synths, whispered vocals, cassette hiss, and reverb.
