69 Love Songs

Description

*69 Love Songs* is the sixth studio album by the American band The Magnetic Fields, originally released in 1999 by Merge Records. The cult three-volume concept album is composed of 69 love songs, all written by Stephin Merritt, the band's frontman. Conceived as a musical review, the album was not designed as an album about love, but as an album about love songs themselves, which can ultimately be very far from anything related to love. Many different genres are represented on the album. It features country, synth-pop, free jazz, and melancholic love ballads. While all the songs deal with love in one way or another, the form is often ironic or quirky, as in the track "Yeah! Oh, Yeah!" which tells the story of a husband who murders his wife. The lyrics of *69 Love Songs* explore heterosexual, homosexual, and bisexual relationships. The concept album received critical acclaim upon its release.
