3 years after Strange House and its torrent of hits, the Londoners of The Horrors make their big return, and what a return! This second album, Primary Colours, is in my opinion one of the best records released this year in England. We leave behind the rough and violent side of the first album to dive straight into the depths of an extremely good second album: polished production, vocals and songwriting at a level above the previous one. The Horrors mark a turning point here: the album sounds very 80s, in the NEU!, Jesus & Mary Chain or even at times Joy Division vein. Mirror's Image, the first track, is a perfect introduction: its synth, both exhilarating and gothic, easily transports us into the band's world. At times I wondered if I was finally listening to something already done, but no. I think they take us beyond expectations and beyond what we were waiting for from them. Then come the tracks New Ice Age, Primary Colours, I Only Think Of You or the excellent Sea Within A Sea, all of which bring to mind the Sonic Youth, Velvet Underground, Siouxsie era.. The Londoners led by the great Faris therefore kick aside all those flash-in-the-pan bands we’re used to listening to. With this second album they show what they are capable of and are undoubtedly headed for a brilliant future.
