Compilation of the "greatest hits," the first time a complete overview of The Fall's career is available on vinyl. Upon its original release, the CD was considered the most comprehensive and accomplished panorama of the band's recordings, and it remains unmatched. Like other Fall reissues, it was compiled by Daryl Easlea (who also wrote the notes) in collaboration with Conway Patton, a Fall expert. The mastering was done by longtime sound engineer Andy Pearce, with illustrations by Becky Stewart. The Fall was an English post-punk band, formed in Manchester in 1976. The band existed in one form or another until 2018, around its founder and only permanent member, Mark E. Smith.
Initially associated with the punk movement of the late 1970s, the band underwent several stylistic changes over the years, but was often characterized by an abrasive guitar sound and frequent use of repetition, always supported by Smith's distinctive vocals and often cryptic lyrics. The band was known for its prolific output: they released more than 25 studio albums, and more than triple that counting live albums and other releases. They never achieved widespread commercial success, aside from a few hit singles. The band was long associated with BBC disc jockey John Peel, who supported them from the beginning of their career and cited The Fall as his favorite band, stating: "They are always different; they are always the same."
