The Magic City is a testament to the evolution of Sun Ra's music in the mid-1960s. According to many enthusiasts and researchers, this album is among Ra's most iconic studio recordings. Although the "city" mentioned in the album's title is supposedly New York, where the album was recorded, it actually refers to the leader's hometown, Birmingham, Alabama, and a large metal sign bearing the words "Birmingham, The Magic City" erected in front of the train station in 1926. The Magic City contains only four tracks, but the main theme lasts nearly thirty minutes. Next are "The Shadow World" and "Abstract Eye"/"Abstract I," which are two variants of the same composition. These tracks are essentially collective improvisations recorded live.
