Super Sonic Jazz (later re-released as Super Sonic Sounds, an expression that nevertheless featured prominently on the back of the original LP sleeve) was one of many albums recorded by Sun Ra for the Saturn label between the mid-1950s and the early 1960s. It was recorded in 1956 at RCA Studios in Chicago and was in fact the first album to be released on the El Saturn label, run by Sun Ra and Alton Abraham. El Saturn is now considered, along with Charles Mingus and Max Roach's Debut label and Harry Partch's Gate 5 label, to be one of the earliest and most active independent labels.
