Persistent rumors are confirmed: Stephen Malkmus’s “electro” album, king of slacker rock, will finally see the light of day! Stephen Malkmus did not head toward an EDM sound, but rather toward an electronic groove inherited from Krautrock. He cites Pete Shelley’s “Homosapien” or Human League as references. To that list, one could add Kraftwerk, as illustrated by the first single, “Viktor Borgia.” Stephen Malkmus began writing the album while living in Berlin, drawing inspiration from the local club scene. Recorded solo, without his band The Jicks for the first time since 2001, Groove Denied leaves plenty of room for an arsenal of drum machines and a series of plug-ins and soft synths, but all of Stephen Malkmus’s lo-fi DNA is still there. This new album is set to shake up preconceived ideas and establish him as a key player in music, from 90s lo-fi rock to hiptronica techno.
