Produced by Brian Paulson at River North Recorders in Chicago and released on Touch and Go Records in 1991, the six songs of Spiderland methodically outline a new sonic continent. The music is tense, menacing, and haunting; its structure is largely built on absence and restraint, on the echo space between notes, but it is punctuated by sudden and thrilling explosions of unrestrained fury. It is a sound that no one had heard before and that no one will ever forget. The strange and now iconic black and white cover photo, showing the four band members breaking the surface of the water, was taken by their friend Will Oldham. Spiderland gave birth to an entirely new genre, often referred to as post-rock, and is considered one of the most important and influential records of the past thirty years. Slint disbanded shortly before the release of Spiderland. The band members then played in Tortoise, The Breeders, Palace, The For Carnation, Papa M, Evergreen, Interpol, and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.
