Forty years after the concerts, the live recording at Le Palace Theatre is a unique testimony to Gainsbourg's stage resurrection, supported by a legendary band at the peak of its creativity. Gainsbourg recorded his 13th album, Aux armes et cætera, in Kingston in January 1979, accompanied by the Sly & Robbie team, Jamaica's most prominent rhythm section. This 100% reggae album finally brought Gainsbourg widespread success: Aux armes et cætera topped the charts and sold 200,000 copies in less than two months. Encouraged by the acclaim of a rejuvenated audience, a series of concerts was scheduled for the end of the year. The Jamaican musicians from Aux armes et cætera were called back for the occasion. In the meantime, album sales had exceeded 400,000 copies. The concert program consisted of tracks from the Aux armes et cætera album, supplemented by three older songs re-orchestrated for the occasion: 'Docteur Jekyll et Monsieur Hyde', 'Harley Davidson', and 'Bonnie and Clyde'. A total of 13 concerts were given at Le Palace. Spread over three nights, December 26, 27, and 28, 1979, the sound recordings were made on 24-track tape.
