Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever returns with Endless Rooms, the third album by the Melbourne quintet made up of brothers Tom and Joe Russo, FranKeaney, Joe White and Marcel Tussie. Described by the band as what they do best, namely chasing songs together in the same room, Endless Rooms is a testament to RBCF’s collaborative spirit and live power. If the initial ideas were exchanged online over long periods separated by lockdowns, the album was truly born during small windows of freedom in which the band settled into a rammed earth house built by the Russo family in the 1970s, in the Australian bush about two hours’ drive north of Melbourne. It was there that the album’s 12 tracks took shape, inspired by the acoustics and atmosphere of this lakeside house, so much so that they decided to record the album there. The house also appears on the album cover. For the first time, the band self-produced the album (alongside engineer, collaborator and old friend Matt Duffy), creating their most naturalistic and expansive project to date. The result is a collection of songs steeped in the spirit of the place, punctuated by recordings of rain, fire, birds and wind. It is almost an anti-concept album. The “endless rooms” of the title reflect their love of creating worlds in their songs. Each one is like a bare room to be furnished, where the possibilities are endless.
