Richard Laviolette (1982-2023) released his second album, « a little less like a rock, a little more like home », on CD in 2006 on Burnt Oak Records, an independent and cooperative label run by artists, co-founded by Brad MacInerny, Ryan Newell, and Jiaqing Wilson-Yang, and active between 2005 and 2007. Burnt Oak was located in a rented house at 127 Grange Street in Guelph, Ontario, where the collective lived, rehearsed, gathered, and organized all-ages concerts. They also recorded their respective tracks, prepared and shipped CD orders, and created their own album covers. Blending folk, rock, and country influences, « a little less like a rock, a little more like home » is a highly regarded lo-fi classic, driven by brilliant songwriting and a powerful voice, and infused with Richard's anti-capitalist, anti-colonialist, DIY, and community engagement beliefs. This album includes some of Richard's most timeless songs and performances, including the unclassifiable magic of « Qq », the intimate and cosmic heart-wrenching « Ants vs. Universe », and the beautiful finger-picked folk song « Oncoming Trains ».
