Over the past seven years, Public Memory's distinctive use of analog synthesizers, electronic rhythms mixed with organic percussion, lo-fi sound design, and creaky atmospheres has created a uniquely sinister and shadowy world. The opening seconds of Elegiac Beat, the new album from New York's Robert Toher (ERAAS) and his solo synth-wave project, immediately immerse us in this world. The album starts without preamble, with the listener 'in media res' from the very beginning. A bit of light here, some shadows pushed back there, a touch of jazz and funk among the dub and krautrock. It's an unknown, ambiguous atmosphere that pushes Public Memory toward new horizons. Elegiac Beat exists between two places, and as it straddles the line between them, we can't tell if the light it brings shines directly from the sun, or if it is faintly reflected through this majestic world.
