Expected to deliver after their admirable "Dr Doolittle", the Pixies deliver with "Bossanova" their least demonstrative album. Honest, carefully cultivating this clever blend of surf music and thorny guitars, the four from Boston have abandoned the electric rides that gave their music that sulfurous atmosphere. Less aggressive, the Pixies’ pop brushes against classicism and seems to want to charm the general public — notably on "Allison" and the famous "Velouria". More contemplative, completely obsessed with the theme of UFOs and Martians, Black Francis has softened his singing and lets Kim Deal’s delightful voice express itself more than usual.
