Coup de tête is a film that, once seen, never leaves you. Isn't that the essence of a cult film? The character of François Perrin, played by Patrick Dewaere, a footballer from the Trincamp club, is a romantic hero, the only pure being facing the hostility and pettiness of the local notables and the populace of a "lower-class" French town. When the name Pierre Bachelet is mentioned, the average listener thinks of Les Corons or L'an 2001. Yet these are just trees hiding a forest of compositions for cinema, the most famous of which are Emmanuelle, Histoire d'O, and Gwendoline. The more curious also enjoy his recordings for the Resonance project, whose 1976 album is a UFO of progressive disco produced in France but designed for the international market, foreshadowing the French Touch thirty years in advance. There is no doubt that Thomas Bangalter from Daft Punk must have listened to this album through his father, cosmic disco producer Daniel Vangarde. With the theme of Coup de Tête that he develops throughout the soundtrack, Pierre Bachelet manages to convey this provincial melancholy against a backdrop of endless Sundays, from which the romanticism of the Dewaere-like hero, a symbol of the raw and sensitive, emerges. But lift your spirits! There is this haunting music tailor-made for Dewaere that reminds us that sometimes the individual and their wild hope triumph over the masses.
