Originally released in 2004 as a CD only, "Incoherence" consisted of 14 songs that were all linked together to form a continuous piece of music, the first time in many years that Peter Hammill had adopted this approach. All the pieces shared a common lyrical theme of miscommunication and language errors. Upon its release, the album was highly praised by fans and critics and is one of Peter's most acclaimed later works. "Incoherence" was completed just before Peter suffered a heart attack. After taking some time to recover, he explains today: "When I returned to the studio, I didn't really want to go back to the mixes, so 'Incoherence' was ultimately released with the originals. At some point, I started considering a vinyl release for the album and realized I should do a remix element to find a point of separation. When I revisited the tracks, I had the idea that I could now do a much better mixing job than I had originally done. So, little by little, I continued. I also decided that this time, it would be interesting to have a version of the album divided into individual songs, finally exposing the original start and end points." This 2CD edition from Esoteric Recordings contains Peter's new "continuous" mix as well as a CD of his mixes of the individual songs with fully restored artwork and constitutes a definitive edition of one of Peter Hammill's great works.
