Initially released on April 14, 2023, this debut album is the work of London-based producer, sound artist, and composer Paul Cousins. Paul works with meticulously maintained tape machines to transform and alter his electronic compositions. His prepared tape loops form the basis of Vanishing Artefacts' 12 intricate compositions. Original ideas, processed on quarter-inch tape, become a blurred facsimile of their initial state, as the tape is manipulated and modified to shape something new. “A question I asked myself when creating this album was: what if audio imperfections were lost forever? With the constant improvement of recording technologies, the limitations of audio formats are less concerning. But limitations have character and offer great freedom, especially with tape. Being able to physically touch and manipulate sound is a very important and visceral part of this process. Unlike other ambient music I have composed, I want this music to be tactile and very tangible. While it can soar, I also want to show the string attached to the balloon.” It is for this reason that many tracks contain the sound of the room and the wonderful noises these machines make.
