Released on August 25, 2023, Formless is an album haunted by the shadow of loss, yet punctuated by glimmers of light. Born from a period of grief and pandemic isolation, the record captures the quest for possible solace in a world in ruins. Ora Cogan evokes precarious love, pain, and inner struggles with a rugged sensibility, but also subtle humor and unexpected bursts of hope. Recorded almost entirely live on analog tape with David Proctor and Finn Smith at Risque Disque (Vancouver Island), the album is co-produced with David Parry of the band Loving. It features notable guests such as Cormac Mac Diarmada (Lankum) on "Feel Life" and Y La Bamba, in a duet on "Ways of Losing," adding a rich sonic and emotional depth to the whole. Each track tells a unique story: "Katie Cruel," a spectral ballad about a sex worker following wandering soldiers; "Cowgirl," a psychedelic country meditation on grief and isolation; or "Feel Life," which oscillates between everyday chaos and monumental loss. With an extraordinary voice, both texture and intensity, Ora Cogan delivers a sensory and committed work, at the heart of a decaying world. Turquoise vinyl edition.
