When MONO recorded their previous album, OATH, with their friend and long-time collaborator, Steve Albini, in 2023, the band had no idea it would be their last studio album together. Albini tragically passed away the following year, a loss that plunged MONO into deep sorrow and great uncertainty. Albini had become a fundamental part of their sound, and the idea of replacing him was nothing short of daunting. That's when Brad Wood (Touché Amoré, The Smashing Pumpkins) came into the picture. Chosen for his deep understanding of MONO's creative and technical process, as well as his long-standing friendship with Steve Albini, Brad Wood entered the legendary Electrical Audio studios of Albini in September 2025 to record what would become Snowdrop. Collaborating once again with conductor and musical director Chad McCullough, based in Chicago, MONO gathered an orchestra of ten musicians and a choir of eight for the eight imposing tracks that make up Snowdrop. Where a melancholic atmosphere might have lingered over Snowdrop, instead there is a profound sense of gratitude. The album expresses a poignant appreciation for the echoes of a well-lived life with a dear friend, and hope for the future. Snowdrop is the sound of a band transforming shock and sadness into hope and wonder, finding new momentum in the freedom of the unknown.
