Just before recording their epic masterpiece, You Are There, in late 2005, MONO began collaborating with their fellow Tokyo native and modern electronic music composer, World's End Girlfriend. The result is a five-part suite of neoclassical grace and luminescence in the art-rock vein, originally released in 2006. As dark as the ocean floor, and almost as strange, Palmless Prayer / Mass Murder Refrain allows MONO to inhabit an illuminated world they had only glimpsed before in their most orchestral compositions. Recorded in several studios in Japan, Palmless Prayer highlights MONO's growing obsession with classical music and World's End Girlfriend's mastery of subtle dynamic shifts. Abandoning their tendency to erupt into infernal bursts of speaker-destroying noise, MONO show remarkable restraint, stretching song lengths to 19 minutes or more, and turning barely perceptible crescendos into earth-shaking events.
