Moby intended this album to be entirely collaborative. He composed and conceived the tracks as love letters to the late 70s/early 80s New York scene that shaped him as a musician. He gave the vocalists complete creative freedom, saying, "Please don't write anything commercial. Let it be strange, let it be personal. There’s no need for rational meaning." Moby’s take on the result: "Because of this complete and unpredictable freedom, I ended up being the recipient of so much brilliant creation. The result is one of the most exciting and surprising things I've done as a musician."
