Midnight Features is a record series conceived by Emil Amos and Alex Hall of Lilacs & Champagne. Inspired by Marvel's What If? comic series, the duo draws from and reappropriates different musical eras. The first volume, Shower Scene, is inspired by 1970s TV show background music, where frantic solos and jazzy sounds accompany stories of crime, drama, and passion. This is the first release where Lilacs & Champagne play live. The band blends instrumentation and sampling, bringing a new sensibility to their sound without abandoning the stylistic hybridity that characterized their previous works. New sonic palettes are explored throughout the six tracks. On "Sensations," the band sounds like the psychedelic jazz of Soft Machine, while "Maple Street" approaches the avant-garde jazz that Moondog might have composed had he lived in the sampling era.
