Nearly ten years after their last album, Lilacs and Champagne picks up where the previous one, Midnight Features Vol. 2: Made Flesh, left off. With bizarre excursions into sentimental music made for television - and children's choirs invoking the darkest and most frightening music the band has created to date - Fantasy World is both transcendent and traumatic. Despite the presence of two founding members of Grails (multi-instrumentalists Emil Amos and Alex Hall), Fantasy World bears little resemblance to the core of the band. Previously existing mainly in a realm adjacent to instrumental hip-hop (J Dilla, Clams Casino, Madlib), Fantasy World exposes the deeper lineage of Lilacs & Champagne as cultural agitators and collage enthusiasts in the vein of the legendary sound satirists, Negativland and Severed Heads.
