Traveling between Mexico, the United States and Canada, Lhasa de Sela gained international recognition with the release of her first album, La Llorona, in 1997. It was at Les Bobards, an iconic venue on the Montreal cultural scene, that the story began, as Yves Desrosiers and Lhasa shared their passion for music on stage, through Mexican songs and a few jazz classics such as Fever.
One year later, in 1994, Yves and Lhasa recorded some of their interpretations in a studio in the Lower Laurentians. Singing the traditional songs of her childhood, Lhasa learned how to convey emotions, while also discovering a voice, her own, accompanied by Yves Desrosiers’ unique guitar playing, blending different styles. One can hear the obvious beginnings of the sound they would go on to solidify together on La Llorona.
