With a continuous series of concerts and a self-titled demo pressed twice (and sold out), the New York-based band Lathe of Heaven has proven to be a powerful and cohesive force amid the torrent of hardcore punk and synthesized pop currently proliferating in the American underground. Formed in 2021, the band includes members from notable Brooklyn-based projects such as People's Temple, Porvenir Oscuro, Pawns, Android, Hustler, and many others. While this list of past and alternative musical projects showcases a diverse range of genres and skills, Lathe of Heaven can only be understood as a departure from these influences, exploring a sound that is entirely its own. Nearly two years later, LoH is finally ready to unveil its debut album Bound by Naked Skies. After careful consideration, this eleven-track LP blends elements of British New Wave and Finnish Post-Punk in a nuanced juxtaposition of 80s sonic quirks. Incorporating themes of classic and contemporary science fiction, Bound by Naked Skies owes as much to its literary influences as to the music that informs its unique and deliberate sound. Paying powerful homage to the unsettling worlds of authors Arthur C. Clarke, Octavia Butler, Ken Liu, and of course Ursula Le Guin (whose novel gave the band its name), themes of cosmology (Ekpyrosis), simulation (Heralds of the Circuit-Born), mental illness (Moon-Driven Sea), and ontology (Entropy, The Spider, etc.) are woven implicitly throughout the band's work, offering a glimpse into the minds of those tormented by the ambiguous nature of humanity's terrifying and not-so-distant future.
