Katatonia released in 2003 Viva Emptiness, a major album of rock and metal melancholy, now considered one of the peaks of their discography. Formed in 1991 by Anders Nyström and Jonas Renkse, the band first made a name for itself in gothic doom/death alongside Paradise Lost and My Dying Bride, before evolving towards a more atmospheric and melodic progressive metal. Viva Emptiness marks this transition with a dark, tense, and emotionally charged sound, recorded in Stockholm in 2002.
