To celebrate the 21st anniversary of this iconic Juana Molina album, released in 2000, here is a very special reissue, remastered and accompanied by a substantial booklet retracing the beginnings of Juana’s musical career, and containing many anecdotes, testimonials, photos and previously unreleased drawings. The album Segundo was the starting point of Juana Molina’s international trajectory, and the story of this record is full of twists and turns. After ending her career as a television comedian while at the height of her fame in her native Argentina, Juana signed with a major label, which imagined making her the spearhead of a new Latin pop wave, and had her record an album -overproduced- with a star producer. Juana then decided to find her own path and began working on a second album (which would simply be titled Segundo). The adventure would last four years, and would involve recording sessions in Argentina and in several successive homes she occupied on the west coast of the United States, a failed attempt to obtain a residence permit (green card), the involvement of several producers and four different record labels, each of whom had their own idea of the direction Juana should take... Juana remains untamable, continues on her path and, along the way, develops her personal method and the distinctive sound that would characterize her music. She writes: "From the moment Segundo took shape, I took a path that I have still not abandoned to this day. That is why this album is so important to me. It contains in germ everything I have done since. I understood how to compose in real time, learned to abandon the very concept of a "demo", discovered how to capture and build on those moments of searching and finding. Everything else became superfluous." Segundo was finally released on a small Argentine label, ended up semi-accidentally in Japan where the album took off instantly, and was eventually released by the important English label Domino in 2003. The reception of Segundo launched Juana Molina into orbit and allowed her to begin touring the world, build a base of devoted fans, and continue recording increasingly extraordinary records, including five studio albums (the latest, Halo, was hailed by the Anglo-Saxon media upon its release in 2017) and one live album (ANRMAL, 2020)."
