Joseph Omicil, Jr., professionally known as Jowee Omicil, is a Haitian-Canadian musician. He has previously worked with artists such as Roy Hargrove, Pharoah Sanders, Tony Allen, Kenny Garrett, Jacob Desvarieux, Glen Ballard, Harold Faustin, Michel Martelly... He was the master of ceremonies for Quincy Jones' 85th birthday celebration at the Montreux Festival. He also appeared in the Netflix series The Eddy, produced by Damien Chazelle, and in the film Le temps d'aimer directed by Katell Quillévéré (selected for the Cannes Film Festival 2023). The Bois-Caïman ceremony is the first major collective uprising in Haiti against slavery. On his new album, SpiriTuaL HeaLinG: Bwa KaYimaN FreeDoM SuiTe, Jowee interprets the revolution of his ancestors in his own way. He gathered all his air chambers: soprano, alto, tenor, woodwinds, clarinets, piccolo flute, cornet, everything that blows, everything that winds, everything that rumbles. If "HaricoT VerT" takes us from the depths of the Haitian forest to Monk's swing, with "LangaJ RaLarivé" we find ourselves in the sunny streets of Haiti where rara (the sounds of carnival street) plays before entering Bwa Kayiman, the place of liberation for the Black people. It is a tribute to the gods of Free Jazz. These are love notes to Ornette Coleman. A one-hour ceremony of non-stop improvisation, a sacred healing ceremony for meditation purposes.
