Jonas Kaufmann chose to surprise by recording Die schöne Müllerin: “I wanted to record this cycle before it was too late. Die schöne Müllerin requires a young voice and a young soul! It’s the story of a boy who sets out to conquer the world, joyful and carefree, and who is confronted head-on with adversity. The failure of his love for the miller’s daughter is his first experience of pain. For this innocence to be relatively credible, the performer must not be too mature.” Jonas Kaufmann, accompanied by pianist Helmut Deutsch, passionately interprets these poems by Wilhelm Müller, elevated by Schubert's music.
