Swallow tales

Description

The guitarist John Scofield celebrates the music of his friend and mentor Steve Swallow in a recording full of beans and spirit, recorded in one day in New York in March 2019 ... 'old school' as Scofield puts it, while acknowledging that more than forty years of friendship have prepared for this record to reach such heights of inspiration. John was only 20 years old and still studying at Berklee when he met and played for the first time with the bassist, initiating a collaboration that has never ceased since. 'I love his way of writing,' confides Scofield while detailing the selection of Swallow's compositions explored in the record – a choice covering a wide range by mixing some classics like 'Hullo Bolinas', 'Eiderdown', 'Falling Grace' or 'Radio', with lesser-known works. The connection between Scofield and Swallow bursts forth at every moment. John: 'Sometimes when we play it's as if we form one big guitar!' On drums, Bill Stewart, Scofield's loyal partner since the early 90s, provides an environment attentive to every nuance and fully focused on collective interaction. 'What Bill does is much more than 'playing the drums,' explains Scofield. 'He feeds the music with his melodic vein, while really swinging hard.'
