Named after the Grateful Dead song that concludes this inspired double album, 'Uncle John's Band' showcases the great guitarist John Scofield at a particularly creative moment in his career.
Choosing to tackle a decidedly eclectic repertoire, Scofield, leading his trio consisting of Vicente Archer on double bass and Bill Stewart on drums, revisits songs by Bob Dylan ("Mr Tambourine Man") and Neil Young ("Old Man"), as well as Leonard Bernstein's "Somewhere" and Miles Davis's great classic "Budo," from the legendary Birth of the Cool sessions. Other jazz standards like "Stairway to the Stars" and "Ray's Idea" complete the program alongside seven original pieces by Scofield, exploring a wide variety of styles and moods ranging from swing to funk and folk.
