Since signing with Atlantic, John Coltrane has been exploring various facets of free jazz, but here the saxophonist offers a more bluesy interlude, as if returning to his roots. Nevertheless, Plays the Blues does not escape those wild flights that "Trane" loves, especially since at the time of recording (in October 1960), the artist has developed a passion for the soprano saxophone. The tracks Blues to Bechet and Mr. Syms are a preview of this passionate fervor that he will fully express on the album My Favorite Things. However, it is on the tenor saxophone that he captures the most magical moment of this album with Mr. Knight. Excerpt from the ideal Fnac discography 2017.
