On September 15, 1957, John Coltrane walked into Rudy Van Gelder’s Hackensack studio and created a 40+ minute masterpiece that is one of the greatest jazz records of all time. Blue Train is a pioneering five-song hard bop release, steeped in the blues, that exalts with pockets of power and poetry, excursions of ferocity and finesse, stretches of blistering velocity, and soulful tenderness.
