The new album by John Carroll Kirby, Blowout, was written during a recent stay in Puerto Viejo, Costa Rica. Between the 5 a.m. wake-ups from the oropendola birds and the psychedelic sunsets, he wrote Blowout, inspired by the local people, music, and nature. Although the songs are joyful, this joy is tinged with melancholy. According to Kirby, "Blowout is about indulging yourself even when life is tough, before the candle goes out."
