Hope and Fury is the new studio album by Grammy Award-winning artist Joe Jackson, written and recorded between Berlin and New York. The album features nine new songs performed with Jackson's long-time band — Graham Maby (bass), Teddy Kumpel (guitar), Doug Yowell (drums), along with Peruvian percussionist Paulo Stagnaro. Produced by Joe Jackson and Patrick Dillett, Hope and Fury marks a return to what Jackson calls his "own mainstream": sophisticated pop songs infused with rock, jazz, funk, and Latin influences — or, in his words, "Bicoastal LatinJazzFunkRock." Through nine new songs, Jackson alternates between social irony and intimate emotions. "Welcome to Burning-By-Sea" depicts a fictional coastal town inspired by his hometown of Portsmouth, "End of the Pier" connects 1922 to the post-pandemic era, while "I'm Not Sorry" and "Fabulous People" reveal his biting humor. More tender, "Made God Laugh" and "See You In September" add a touch of melancholy. In the spirit of his landmark albums Night and Day (1982), Laughter and Lust (1991), and Fool (2019), Hope and Fury offers catchy melodies, sharp lyrics, and a vibrant groove, driven by a voice and keyboard playing that remain as strong as ever.
